Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk, room temperature
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons + 2 teaspoons orange zest (about 4 oranges), separated
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom

Orange Glaze

  • 2 cups Powdered Sugar
  • 2 teaspoons orange zest
  • 1/3 cup fresh orange juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Line two 8x4 inch loaf pans with parchment paper and lightly spray with non-stick spray.
  3. In a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, beat the granulated sugar, buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, 2 tablespoons of orange zest and vanilla until combined.
  4. In a medium sized bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, kosher salt, baking powder and ground cardamom.
  5. On low speed, carefully and slowly mix the flour mixture into the wet ingredients until batter is smooth.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared loaf pans and bake, loosely tented with aluminum foil, for about 30 minutes, or until an inserted wooden toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Place on a wire rack to let bread cool completely.
  8. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, remaining 2 teaspoons of orange zest and fresh orange juice. Add more orange juice depending how thick you want the glaze. Drizzle over top of cooled bread.
  9. Slice and serve. Cover and store leftover bread at room temperature for 1 day or in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
