Light, fluffy and delicious, these Spiced Pear Waffles are easy to make and are freezer friendly too!
Homemade waffles are easy to make and taste much better than store-bought waffles. These spiced pear waffles are a staple in my house in the fall. Not only are they easy to make, but they are freezer-friendly too! These Belgian-style pear waffles are light and fluffy on the inside, with a perfect crisp on the outside. Made with diced pears and notes of cinnamon and brown sugar, these waffles are an excellent fall breakfast for your family or for a crowd!
Every year during pear harvest, I make a couple batches of these spiced pear waffles and freeze them. They are perfect for busy school mornings and long harvest days. Harvest time is hectic around the farm. Not only is my husband working non-stop, but I’m also managing the kids, the house and my job solo while my husband manages harvest. So having freezer-friendly, kid and adult approved meals that are easy to make are always a win in my book! And these waffles check off all those boxes.
Top these waffles with diced pears and real maple syrup, whipped cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar and cinnamon for a deliciously fall-inspired breakfast! If you’re feeling indulgent, top these delicious waffles with my homemade caramel sauce – soooo good!

How to Make Pear Spiced Waffles
First, peel and finely chop your pears, set aside. Next, whisk together your dry ingredients (all-purpose flour, salt, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, baking powder and dark brown sugar) in a large bowl and then set aside. Whisk the wet ingredients (eggs, buttermilk, butter and vanilla) into a medium bowl and set aside.
Make a well in the dry ingredients. Carefully pour your wet ingredients into your dry ingredients and mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix. Fold in the diced pears.
Next, preheat the waffle maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Most importantly, don’t forget to spray your waffle maker with cooking spray on both the top and bottom plates. I use this waffle iron and it doesn’t need much greasing but yours might so make sure to check your appliance’s instructions. Next, spread the batter evenly over the bottom of the waffle maker (generally about ½ cup per waffle for my waffle maker) and close the top.
Cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions, or until the waffles are as crisp as you like them. I usually turn to the medium setting on my waffle maker, but all appliances will cook at different rates. So please follow your manufacturer’s instructions.
Repeat with remaining batter and don’t forget to spray the waffle iron top and bottom plates with every set. Top your homemade spiced pear waffles with caramel sauce, honey or real maple syrup and fresh diced pears. Enjoy!
How to Freeze Homemade Waffles
Freezing homemade waffles is easy and a great way to have a healthy and delicious breakfast ready for when mornings are rushed. Simply make waffles according to the recipe and allow the waffles to cool completely on a baking rack in a single layer. This is important so air circulates underneath the waffles while they cool. If your waffles cooled on a plate or a baking sheet, they could get soggy from the steam, so please use a baking rack.
After the waffles have cooled completely, set the waffles flat on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicon baking mat. Freeze, in a single layer, for at least two hours. Next, stack the waffles in a freezer Ziploc bag and squeeze out as much air as possible before sealing the bag. The waffles will keep in the freezer for several months.
How to Reheat Homemade Waffles
Use your toaster or oven to reheat your frozen waffles. There is no need to thaw your frozen waffles prior to reheating. You can use your toaster or toaster oven to reheat individual waffles.
For a larger batch of waffles, line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicon baking mat. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Transfer frozen waffles to the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes, or until warmed through.
Best Pears for Baking
Baking throughout fall gives us plenty of chances to use seasonal ingredients. See my tips below for the best type of pear to use for baking.
- Best pear varieties for baking: Bosc, Anjou and Bartlett
- For baking, look for pears that are firm but ripe.
- Check the neck. Apply gentle pressure to the neck of the pear with your thumb. If it yields to pressure, it’s ripe.
- If the pears are rock hard when you buy them, you will have to wait a few days for them to ripen on the counter.
- Mushy pears aren’t good for baking, so don’t use them for this recipe.
